1960sMany years after solitary confinement was banned by the high courts, it was reintroduced as a form of punishment to inmates in the 1960s. Provoked by the beating of a Chicano inmate by a prison guard, a diverse group of prisoners including Chicanos, blacks, American Indians, and whites joined together across racial and ethnic lines to confront the prison authority. This new form of solitary confinement was used as a punitive tool used to break the spirits of inmates considered disruptive, violent, or disobedient. This to would prove to be an ineffective strategy, as it caused inmates to become even more disruptive and violent. With this form of solitary confinement again failing, prison officials again looked to modify isolation in the 1980s.
